Biofeedback Therapy
What is biofeedback therapy?
Biofeedback therapy teaches you how to listen to signals in your body in order to decrease pain and stress. This therapy is fun and involves computer games. It is non-invasive (nothing will break the skin or enter the body). After therapy, you will feel more in control of your pain.
Biofeedback therapy teaches you to have more control over your body and decreases stress, pain and anxiety. During biofeedback treatments, sensors are placed on your body, like a Velcro belt and small, painless clip, to measure things like breathing and heart rate. During the session, you will see your heart rate and breathing rate on the computer screen and play games to learn how to relax your body and mind.
Why should I try biofeedback therapy?
Biofeedback therapy teaches you how to relax and manage your stress by showing you the effects of stress on your body in real time. If you are also in psychotherapy (also known as talk therapy), biofeedback can improve your knowledge and coping skills even more.
In the CHLA Pain Medicine Clinic, we focus on types of biofeedback that help you have a better understanding of the mind-body connection. We want you to feel in control of your pain. We do not currently practice neurofeedback in our clinic, which is also called EEG (electroencephalograph) biofeedback because it focuses on brainwaves and does not actively teach children how to regulate their emotions and body.
