Online Privacy

This Online Privacy Policy (“Policy”) describes the privacy practices of Children's Hospital Los Angeles (“us,” “our,” or “we”) in relation to personal information collected through chla.org (the “Website”) and our Children’sLA mobile app (the “App”) (together, the “Online Services”).

This Policy does not apply to other online services, such as websites and mobile applications, that we own, provide, or maintain, but do not post a link to this Policy.

The Online Services collects personal information (such as insurance coverage information, vaccine documentation, health-related information, and payment processing information) that is considered Protected Health Information under the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 and its implementing regulations. Our practices related to Protected Health Information obtained through the Online Services are governed by our Notice of Privacy Practices.

By accessing the Online Services, you acknowledge this Policy and agree to the Terms of Use.

What Personal Information is Collected

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles may obtain personal information through the Online Services, such as when you donate money to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, sign up for our newsletter, submit answers to our online surveys, or register for events. Personal information we collect depends on your interactions with us, and may include, but is not limited to, contact information (such as your name, phone number, mailing address, and email address), and payment card information and billing information (such as when you donate to us).

Certain features of the App may require access to certain information from your device. Depending on the App’s permission settings, the App may access the device’s location (including precise or approximate location) or photos/media/files/storage (such as content you upload to or download from the App).

How We Use Cookies and Other Similar Technologies

We or our vendors may use cookies and other similar technologies on certain webpages or locations (which may also be tied to certain interactive features) of the Online Services for various purposes. For example, to support functionality, improve technical performance, perform analytics, and, in some cases, for marketing purposes. We, and our vendors, may combine information collected through these technologies with information about you over time and across the internet.

We may implement data modification and obfuscation tools to help us limit how certain information may be collected from vendors through cookies and similar technologies. These tools act as an intermediary between the Online Services and these technologies, and allow us to adjust how such technologies interact with the Online Services.

If you use any third-party tools, including browser tools, to set preferences related to cookies, please note that we do not control such third-party tools and how they function and your set preferences may result in the Online Services not working as intended.

How Personal Information is Used and Disclosed

Children's Hospital Los Angeles may use and disclose personal information for various purposes, including at your direction, such as to provide you features through the Online Services to process donations, to conduct surveys, to communicate with you, send you email newsletters, for customer service purposes, to personalize your experience, to maintain and improve the Online Services, for research purposes, as well as to conduct marketing.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles may use vendors that perform services on our behalf to collect or receive personal information. For example, we may use a payment processor vendor to collect your payment information when you donate to us. Donation information is used to process your donation or fundraiser registration, provide you with a receipt or confirmation of your donation, and communicate with you.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles may occasionally allow other nonprofit organizations to send mail to its donors. If you do not want to receive such mailings, please contact 800-817-4543 or foundation@chla.usc.edu to opt out of future mailings.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles may also use and disclose your information in response to a subpoena or similar investigative demand, a court order, or a request for cooperation from law enforcement or any government agency; to establish or exercise our legal rights, including, but not limited to, efforts to investigate, prevent, or take other action regarding illegal activity, suspected fraud, or other wrongdoing; to protect and defend the rights, property, or safety of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles or others; to enforce our terms and conditions or other agreements and policies; or as otherwise required by law.

Personal information may also be used and disclosed in connection with a substantial corporate transaction including, but not limited to, the sale of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’s business, a divestiture, merger, consolidation, asset sale, bankruptcy, change in control of the company or one of our affiliates, or in preparation for any of these events.

We will store your personal information that we obtain through the Online Services for no longer than is necessary to achieve the purposes for which the information was collected, or as may be permitted under applicable law.

Data Security

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has reasonable security measures in place to protect against the loss, misuse, and alteration of your personal information under its control. However, no method of transmission over the internet and no means of electronic or physical storage is absolutely secure. As such, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us electronically.

Your Choices

Children's Hospital Los Angeles may use your personal information to send you marketing emails with information and materials we think may be of interest to you. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails through the instructions provided in the marketing email. Please note that if you unsubscribe from receiving promotional emails from us, we may still send you transactional or informational emails.

You may adjust certain preferences and settings through the settings menu in the App, or by changing the settings on your device. You may uninstall an App from your device at any time to discontinue the collection of your personal information through that App.

Other Online Services

The Online Services may contain links or interactive features related to online services of third-party organizations that are not operated, maintained, or controlled by us. Children's Hospital Los Angeles is not responsible for the privacy practices of online services that we do not own or control. If you provide your personal information to third parties through their online services, you will be subject to that third party’s privacy practices. This includes any online services operated by our vendors that provide us your personal information at your direction (such as portals or features provided by a vendor). For example, certain third-party interactive features may allow you to share content on the Online Services to your social media profile. This Policy does not apply to any personal information that you provide to a third-party online service.

Visitors from Outside the United States

Our servers, which store personal information collected from the Online Services, are located in the United States. If you are accessing the Online Services from another country, please be aware that you are transmitting information collected through the Online Services, including your personal information, to the United States. The United States may not afford the same privacy protections as the country where you are accessing the Online Services.

Changes to This Policy

Children's Hospital Los Angeles may change this Policy from time to time at our discretion. We will notify you of changes to this Policy by updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this page. If we materially change this Policy, we will provide you additional notice of such material changes, subject to applicable law.
