Atu Agawu, MD, MPH, MSCE
Like many, my initial instinct to go into medicine came from a non-specific desire to help people. As I pursued a career in medicine, I came to realize that fundamentally I enjoy the combination of science, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership that practicing medicine entails. Building relationships with patients is rewarding, and the opportunity to help alleviate suffering is a privilege that I feel grateful to be able to participate in.
I fell in love with pediatrics during my first clinical rotation. Taking care of children feels natural to me, and I appreciate their resilience and curiosity. Caring for kids provides the opportunity for numerous joyful moments throughout the day, which makes the work feel rewarding and fulfilling.
My favorite part about caring for patients is getting to have conversations with patients and their families, helping them understand their health condition, and (hopefully) eventually feel agency in advocating for their health with the health care system.
I am a long-suffering fan of Arsenal Football Club, and I generally enjoy watching club and international soccer. I also enjoy reading science fiction and fantasy novels and building wildlife-themed LEGO sets.
