Matthew Smith, MD
Matthew Smith, MD is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Smith is a passionate clinician, educator, and leader in health care worker wellbeing. Dr. Smith has been teaching medical students and residents since he started as faculty at USC in 2011 and in 2020 he was awarded Outstanding Teacher for the Pediatric Clerkship.
Dr. Smith's main area of research is around the prevention of the second victim phenomenon among health care providers. He has been instrumental in the development of the Healing Response Team at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, a multidisciplinary group that provides emotional support to health care providers following traumatic events at the hospital. Dr. Smith has also been a leading member of the Schwartz Rounds planning committee. Schwartz rounds provide a structured forum where all medical staff come together to discuss the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare.
Dr. Smith is a general pediatrician who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients. This often includes children with chronic illness or medical complexity.
