Diversity, Equity and Inclusion within the Residency
Health equity is at the heart of what we do at CHLA. We strive to achieve that through our care and reflect that within our team. Examples of this include the following:
- Education on structural competency, racism in medicine, implicit bias, and microaggressions as part of intern orientation and the community pediatrics curriculum
- Small group didactic sessions reviewing AAP policy statements focused on social determinants of health including food insecurity, homelessness, poverty, school attendance, and care of transgender youth
- Guidelines for all presenters to include a learning objective focused on health equity
- Residency Diversity and Inclusion Committee
- Diversity and Inclusion Mentorship Program
Additionally, the hospital has multiple initiatives within DEI including the following:
- Enterprise Resource Groups, which bring faculty and staff together based on shared characteristics or life experiences, including but not limited to:
- Armenian
- Asian Pacific Islander
- The Black Employees and Allies for Transformation
- Human Rights Action Group
- Latina/Latino/Latinx
- LGBTQ+
- Women
- Resiliency Through Equity Speaker Series
- Data collection on race, ethnicity and language
Diversity in Medicine Visiting Rotation Program
The Department of Graduate Medical Education at CHLA is pleased to announce the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Rotation Program. This program provides support for medical students who identify as underrepresented minorities in medicine to participate in the CHLA Visiting Student Program, as well as opportunities to engage with the CHLA pediatric residents, faculty, and community.
A stipend of up to $2000 will be awarded to up to six recipients to help defray the costs of travel and housing. In addition to their clinical experiences, visiting students will be invited to attend daily residency educational conferences and weekly Grand Rounds. Each student will be connected with a mentorship family through CHLA’s Diversity and Inclusion Mentorship Program (DIMP). Mentorship families consist of a faculty mentor, a resident/fellow mentor, and a medical student. Students will also be invited to attend DIMP Professional Development Sessions that occur during their rotations and engage with members of our residency Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Finally, each student will have an individual meeting with the Pediatric Residency Program Director.
Application requirements:
- This program is targeted at students from diverse backgrounds, including those underrepresented in medicine (URiM).
- Applicants must be full-time fourth year students in good standing at an LCME/AOA accredited US medical or osteopathic school, have completed their core pediatric clerkship, and plan to apply to a pediatric residency program.
Applications for the next cycle will open in spring 2025.
