Senior Fellow
Headshot of Kasiemobi (Kasi) Pulliam, MD

Kasiemobi (Kasi) Pulliam, MD

Dr. Pulliam is currently the Senior Pediatric Surgery Fellow. She completed her General Surgery training at the University of Cincinnati. During her tenure as an NIH-funded Research Fellow at the same university from 2018 to 2020, Dr. Pulliam conducted groundbreaking research on the storage of packed red blood cells. Her innovative storage solution, which significantly reduced the production of inflammatory byproducts over the storage period, led to two intellectual property considerations. Her excellence in research has been recognized through multiple awards, and she has contributed to several peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, she is a distinguished member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society.

Junior Fellow
Headshot of Celia Short, MD

Celia Short, MD

Dr. Short is currently the Junior Pediatric Surgery Fellow. She completed her General Surgery training at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans and completed a research fellowship at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in Dr. Kasper Wang’s research lab. Dr. Short’s research focused on novel therapies for preventing the progression of ductular reactions and liver fibrosis in Biliary Atresia. Her excellence in research has been recognized with multiple awards from the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Short has published fifteen manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to presenting abstracts at several national conferences. Following fellowship, she is interested in pursuing a career in academic surgery, with a focus on surgical education and to continue clinical research in Biliary Atresia directed towards screening and early diagnosis.

Professional headshot of Michael Zobel, MD

Michael Zobel, MD

Michael Zobel, MD, completed his training in General Surgery at the University of California San Francisco, where as Chief Resident he received the Nusz Achievement Award for his clinical work, teaching and research efforts. As a Pediatric Surgery Research Fellow at CHLA from 2018-2020, Dr. Zobel investigated novel immune-mediated treatments for neuroblastoma, with funding from the American College of Surgeons. He has received multiple teaching awards, including most recently the Teaching Excellence Award for Cherished Housestaff from the UCSF School of Medicine. He graduated from the Keck School of Medicine of USC as an inductee of Alpha Omega Alpha with Distinction in Research, while at The Saban Research Institute exploring therapeutic pathways for necrotizing enterocolitis. He has published 19 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to four textbook chapters.

Lauren Baumann, MD

Lauren Baumann, MD, finished her General Surgery training at the University of Cincinnati and completed a research fellowship at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. She has a particular interest in global surgery and during her research years had a primary role in the development and implementation of a laparoscopic simulation-based education course for Mexican surgeons as a member of the SAGES Global Affairs Committee. In 2017 and 2018, she took part in the World Health Assembly as a representative of the G4 Alliance, which included the development of a universal operative case log data for standardized data collection. She has spent significant clinical time operating in Malawi, Guatemala and Peru throughout her training. After fellowship, she is interested in pursuing a career in academic global surgery focusing on sustainable growth and delivery of safe surgical care in Latin America.
