Spina Bifida Program

Children with spina bifida often experience complex health challenges that affect multiple systems in their bodies, requiring advanced, coordinated care from a team of experts.

At Children's Hospital Los Angeles, our Spina Bifida Program offers exceptional, specialized care for babies, children, and teens with spina bifida — the second most common major birth defect in the United States. As the largest spina bifida center in Southern California and one of the largest in the nation, our program is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate care at every stage — from prenatal diagnosis to active transition into independent adulthood. Our team of pediatric experts are uniquely trained to address the complex needs of children with spina bifida and other spinal cord abnormalities, offering families the highest level of support and expertise.

The Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Difference

Choosing our Spina Bifida Program means children will have access to a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of specialists who collaborate to create personalized treatment plans. With expertise in both surgical and non-surgical approaches, we are committed to enhancing the quality of life and long-term outcomes for every child in our care. We integrate advanced medical technology, innovative treatments, and compassionate care to provide families with the best possible experience.

Our program includes comprehensive prenatal care through our Fetal Maternal Center, where families can prepare early with specialized services like prenatal counseling, early diagnosis, and tailored treatment options for their unborn babies. As a nationally recognized Spina Bifida Association Clinic Care Partner, we uphold the highest standards in spina bifida treatment, ensuring patients and families receive the most advanced care available. We also prioritize culturally appropriate care, offering support that respects and meets each family’s cultural and linguistic needs, so that everyone feels understood, comfortable, and fully supported throughout their journey.

Advancing Fetal Surgery Research and Innovation

Our program is at the forefront of cutting-edge research and innovative treatments for spina bifida. In 2019, our team partnered with Los Angeles Fetal Surgery through the Fetal Maternal Center to perform the first fully laparoscopic surgery to repair fetal open spina bifida in the Western United States. Since then, we’ve completed this procedure, also referred to as a “keyhole surgery,” on over 80 patients, leading to fewer risks to the mother and much better outcomes for the baby. We also collaborate with top institutions, such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and participate in groundbreaking studies, allowing us to offer the most advanced care and give patients the best possible outcomes.

Comprehensive Care

Our diverse team works together to manage the complex challenges associated with spina bifida, such as hydrocephalus, bowel and bladder control, and mobility issues.

We also provide vital psychosocial support, genetic counseling, and prenatal diagnosis to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients and their families. The medical care of children with Spina Bifida at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is provided by world-class experts consisting of:
