My younger brother was born with CHARGE syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects multiple areas of the body. Seeing the effect this had on my family drove me to pursue a career in the helping professions—medicine in particular. Pediatrics, which placed a large focus on caring not only for the child but also the family, called to me.
I completed my residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. While at Duke, I learned that seeing families in the perinatal period brought me special satisfaction, allowing me to use my own family’s experience to the benefit of others. I also particularly enjoyed the focus on physiology-based decisions that neonatal intensive care afforded. After matching into a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I used my time to develop academic skills in performing rigorous qualitative research and focused my interests on understanding the NICU experience from the family perspective.
