Research Staff Spotlight: Mohit Mehra
“In recent years, advances in data science and big data have opened up new ways to investigate decades-old questions facing pediatrics,” says Mohit Mehra. “To be at the cusp of research and technology is very exciting for me.”
Mohit earned his master’s in computer science and spent nearly a decade working for Philips Healthcare on patient monitoring and cardiology devices. He joined CHLA in 2014 as a software engineer—helping to build the Enterprise Data Lake that now supports research projects across the hospital.
Today, he manages the TSRI’s Data Science and Data Engineering team while also fulfilling the role of a machine learning engineer. The team provides investigators with data services and high-performance computing infrastructure and works in areas such as imaging, genomics, spatial transcriptomics, natural language processing and time-series analyses of electronic medical record data.
“I enjoy the challenges of data science; there’s a constant learning,” Mohit says. “Most of all, I am humbled to be working with clinicians and researchers who are so passionate about their respective fields. It is a great feeling to walk into the hospital and see so many people taking such good care of children and families.”
Originally from India, he has a wealth of hobbies, including playing cricket, doing yoga, playing the guitar and learning traditional Indian singing. He recently became a certified scuba diver, and he especially enjoys taking trips to Costa Rica with his 17-year-old son.
