Work That Matters

Research Staff Spotlight: Shreyash Zanjal

Research Assistant Shreyash Zanjal combines data science and biology in his work in the Computational Imaging of Brain Organization Research Group at CHLA.

“I am so glad and proud to be part of an amazing team at CHLA,” says Shreyash Zanjal. “Whenever I share the impactful nature of our work with my family and friends, it fills me with immense pride.”

Shreyash is a Research Assistant in the Computational Imaging of Brain Organization Research Group (CIBORG) at CHLA, which is led by Natasha Leporé, PhD, in the Division of Radiology and Imaging. In his role, Shreyash primarily focuses on developing data- and algorithm-driven tools to analyze images of the brain early in a child’s life. His goal is to use these tools to make accurate and efficient medical imaging accessible in low-resource areas around the world, fostering healthcare equity.

This work combines two of his interests. “My lifelong ambition has been to meld my expertise in data science with my passion in biology,” Shreyash says. His undergraduate degree was in information technology, and he is now pursuing his master's degree in data science at USC. His current project at CHLA, which receives funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, involves streamlining image processing pipelines to create image analysis tools for low field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems.

Shreyash also helps to organize a competition designed to crowdsource innovative algorithms for medical image analysis and works to enhance his lab’s capabilities by refining deep learning models to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Outside of work, Shreyash enjoys playing video games like “Valorant.” He says that his lifelong love for gaming comes from playing games with his older sisters while growing up Gadchiroli, India. “I also love cooking Indian dishes, a hobby that allows me to stay connected to my roots and family values,” Shreyash says.
