Children's Hospital Los Angeles is proud to share that the following CHLA units recently received 2024 Beacon Awards for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN):

  • 5 East – Silver Beacon Award
  • 5 West – Silver Beacon Award
  • Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit – Silver Beacon Award
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – Gold Beacon Award

The Cardiovascular Acute Care Unit also has an existing Gold-level Beacon Award through March 2026, bringing CHLA's current total of Beacon Award-recognized units to five.

Nursing units that achieve Beacon designation have strong commitments to superior patient outcomes, patient experience, patient safety, quality improvement, work environment, professional nursing practice, and professional development. Quantitative and qualitative data from each unit is considered and compared against other units submitting as well, resulting in a competitive and challenging process. The scoring is out of 100 possible points. Units in the top quartile (76-100 points) receive the Gold Beacon Award. Units in the second quartile (51-75 points) receive the Silver Beacon Award.
