About the Fellowship
The Department of Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles offers a one-year fellowship in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology.
We are a high-volume institution with 495 hospital beds and 14,600 inpatient admissions every year.
The Heart Institute at CHLA cares for approximately 8,000 children annually. Pediatric cardiac anesthesiology fellows will gain a variety of clinical experience in the operating room and in the hospital’s 25-bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU) as well as with perfusion and cardiology/echocardiography.
After completing the program, fellows will have the knowledge and skills to provide care for children with complex congenital heart disease. There are two pediatric cardiac fellowship positions available every year.
Why CHLA?
The Heart Institute at CHLA routinely ranks among the top pediatric cardiology and heart surgery programs nationwide according to U.S. News & World Report. CHLA also ranks among the top 10 pediatric hospitals overall in the U.S. Our institution treats children of all ages undergoing cardiac surgery and cares for children with significant cardiac history undergoing non-cardiac surgery, MRI, interventional radiology or cardiac catheterization procedures. We perform heart transplants and ventricular assist device implantations as well. CHLA does approximately 950 cardiac surgical procedures each year.
Learn More About the Training Program
Advanced clinical training is the primary goal of the one-year fellowship in pediatric cardiac anesthesia. Fellows spend the majority of time providing clinical care in the cardiac operating rooms and catheterization laboratory under the direct supervision of one of the attending cardiac anesthesiologists.
The cardiac anesthesia team cares for infants, children and adolescents with various forms of congenital and acquired heart disease. Treatment is provided in the CTICU or through cardiac surgery, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology laboratories and other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Fellows will spend nine months providing clinical anesthesia in the CVOR, cath/electrophysiology lab, general OR and radiology for CHD patients. The additional months are spent with one month in the CTICU, one month elective and four weeks of vacation. Elective options include dedicated time with perfusion, cardiology, echocardiography, research, or electrophysiology.
If a candidate’s training was primarily in adult cardiac anesthesiology, the program will be adjusted to include a dedicated month of general pediatric anesthesiology.
