ACGME Residency: University of California Irvine/Children's Hospital of Orange County, Orange, CA
I was born and raised in Philadelphia but have slowly been moving west across the country throughout my training and am so happy to have the opportunity to be in sunny Southern California! I know that here I can take care of a truly special and widely diverse group of patients. My interest in endocrinology first stemmed from having a close family member diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at a very young age and seeing how much the condition impacted her childhood and how strong she has become. I have continued to remain very passionate about type 1 diabetes care, as it is truly a lifelong diagnosis and challenge, and I have come to appreciate how much we need to address both the medical and psychosocial aspects of patient care. During the fellowship, I am looking forward to continuing to help patients through their unique journeys with T1DM, further exploring my interests in diabetes technologies and the genetics of diabetes and continuing to hike in beautiful Southern California.

ACGME Residency: University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria. Peoria, IL
I was born in Armenia and grew up in Columbus, Ohio, I am a Buckeye at heart and went to Ohio State University for both my bachelor’s degree and Master of Public Health. I had the opportunity to learn medicine in rural America in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee and then moved back to the Midwest (Illinois) for residency! I have wanted to be a pediatrician since I was a child myself and am so honored to have this amazing opportunity to serve the sweet children of sunny California! During my fellowship, I am excited to experience all aspects of Endocrinology, but I look forward to delving more into Type 1 Diabetes Management, Gender Affirming Care, and treating the Endocrinological Complications Associated with Childhood Cancer. During all aspects of my education, I have had a special interest in working with underserved communities – I can’t imagine a better place to do that than at CHLA. I look forward to exploring all that Los Angeles has to offer with my husband and toddler.

ACGME Residency: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
I grew up in Boston, MA, and lived on the East Coast until coming to Los Angeles for residency at CHLA and falling in love with the West Coast! I excitedly stayed for fellowship because of the incredible, diverse patient population, the complexity of medical diagnoses, and inspiring, supportive colleagues and mentors. I am very interested in how early childhood trauma and stressors can affect different hormonal axes and contribute to varied health outcomes - and hope to study that throughout my fellowship. And also, to keep hiking and exploring new restaurants in LA!

Pediatric Residency: Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Trujillo, Peru
Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship: Universidad Nacional Federico Villareal, Lima, Peru
I am a Pediatric Endocrinologist from Trujillo, Peru. I wanted to continue my training, and I got my ECFMG certificate. I moved with my family last year to start a fellowship at the Pediatric Endocrinology Program at CHLA, and it has been the most extraordinary experience since day one. I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn and help the Hispanic community. I am new in town, and exploring the city is my hobby. I love that Universal Studios and Disneyland are very close. California has beautiful places and every weekend I enjoy visiting a new town.

Medical School: Tulane University School of Medicine
Pediatrics Residency: University of California, San Francisco
I was born in Pasadena, California, not too far from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles! I’ve lived all over the country including New Orleans for medical school and San Francisco for residency, but I choose to come CHLA for fellowship because I love the people in our division, and I learn so much from our patients. I feel privileged to work at our institution. Endocrinology is a broad and varied field, and I am always learning something new. My research interests include diabetes, thyroid, and endocrinopathies related to cancer therapies. But my favorite part of being a fellow is building relationships with continuity clinic patients and seeing them evolve over time.

Medical School: John A Burn School of Medicine, University of Hawaii
Pediatrics Residency: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles
I grew up on Oahu and loved all the activities that Hawaii offers! Biology, ecology, and geology were some of my favorite subjects at school, and I was fascinated to learn about how our body is made of various types of cells and how they interact with each other. I decided to pursue a career in medicine and was excited about my pediatric rotation during medical school. During residency, I decided to apply into endocrinology after seeing so many patients with new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes mellitus go home with confidence and feeling empowered with all the education, they received from the endocrinology team. During residency, I was involved in obesity and food addiction related research. I am also interested in research related to congenital adrenal hyperplasia and development. During fellowship, I am hoping to continue to learn from our amazing mentors at CHLA and continue to surf, climb, and hike through Southern California!

Medical School: David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles
Pediatrics Residency: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
I was born and raised just across town from CHLA, and knew I was interested in a career in science or medicine from a young age. When I learned about the endocrine system in medical school, I loved the physiology and diversity of problems that Endocrinology encompasses. As a pediatrics resident, I had the opportunity to rotate through inpatient and outpatient endocrinology and was fascinated by the complex diagnostic dilemmas and invested in the care of patients with chronic conditions. I noticed that endocrinology was really everywhere- in the NICU, in complex patients, in primary care, as well as in endocrine clinic. I particularly loved taking care of patients with diabetes, learning about the intricacies of treatment, and getting to form longitudinal relationships with kids and their families. I loved looking at the “whole person” while getting to also focus in on a single subspecialty. As a resident I also honed my interest in medical education, and knew I wanted to train in a fellowship program (like CHLA!) where faculty and fellows are passionate as clinicians, scholars, and as educators. During fellowship, I am excited to dive into clinical research in the diabetes space and participate in education related quality improvement and scholarship.
Jennifer Nguyen, MD
Medical School: New York Medical College
Pediatrics Residency: Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Pediatric Residency Program
I was born and raised in sunny southern California. My interest in Endocrinology began while learning about organ systems in my high school biology class where I became fascinated by the intricacies of hormone physiology and the elegance of feedback mechanisms. I carried this same interest with me throughout medical school and residency where I had the opportunity to apply these scientific principles to real-life clinical situations and saw how it positively impacted the lives of patients. During these years, I developed a specific interest in caring for children with type 1 diabetes and spent three summers volunteering at Camp Conrad Chinnock where I had the chance to work with this resilient patient population and witness the incredible technologic advances being made in this field. During fellowship, I hope to continue exploring these passions while learning all that I can about Endocrinology.

Pediatrics Residency: Los Angeles County + University of Southern California Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA
I was born in beautiful Sonoma County in northern California and went to college in San Francisco. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 14, and I knew I wanted to be a pediatric endocrinologist ever since I decided on a career in medicine. Throughout my medical training in Chicago at Rush Medical College and then residency at LA County+USC Medical Center, I have developed my love of endocrinology and met so many amazing mentors and patients along the journey. I am so excited to be a fellow in endocrinology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles to work with the world's experts with one of the most diverse pediatric patient populations. My area of research focus will be on gender identity and disordered eating behavior in adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
