Our research focuses on screening and treatment for adolescent substance use, particularly e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction in the hospital and school-based settings. We develop and evaluate behavioral interventions that combine counseling based on motivational interviewing, health education, and technology-based support to help youth quit e-cigarettes and improve their overall health. Additionally, we conduct research on adolescent sexual and reproductive health through health services research and development and testing of behavioral interventions to improve care access. Our research employs behavioral health mixed methods combining qualitative and quantitative data to deepen our understanding of adolescent health outcomes and create targeted, evidence-based interventions. Ultimately, our goal is to positively impact youth health, particularly regarding adolescent substance use and sexual and reproductive health.
Research Focus:
- Substance use screening and treatment in youth, with a focus on e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction
- Adolescent sexual and reproductive health
- Health outcomes related to youth health behaviors
Research Overview
Our lab's current research focuses on addressing substance use, with a particular emphasis on e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction among youth. Our primary goal is to develop an effective behavioral intervention that combines in-person counseling, health education, and technology-based support to help young people quit using e-cigarettes. By integrating these methods, we aim to create a comprehensive approach that supports young people to overcome nicotine addiction and improve their overall health.
In addition to our work on substance use, we also conduct research focused on adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) by developing and evaluating interventions to improve SRH care access and outcomes.
To guide our research, our team employs complementary approaches, including behavioral health mixed methods research which combines qualitative and quantitative data. This allows us to better understand adolescent health outcomes and to develop more targeted, evidence-based interventions. Through these efforts, we aim to make a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of youth, particularly in the areas of substance use and sexual and reproductive health.
