Simulation Center Courses
The Las Madrinas Simulation Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles provides a modern, experiential learning environment for multidisciplinary teams and individual clinicians. We offer a broad range of simulation courses that help participants learn research-based methods for addressing high-acuity events and complex medical needs in pediatric patients.
Internationally Recognized Training Center
Our medical simulation training center is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare™ for four different standards, including Teaching/Education. This distinction recognizes our commitment to using research-based methods and facilitating high-quality learning experiences.
We are also an American Heart Association-authorized training center for life support certifications, Pediatric experts and researchers specializing in simulation medicine lead our program. They collaborate with facilitators, many of whom are Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators®, and technicians to help learners achieve their goals.
Las Madrinas Simulation Center Learner Testimonial
"Taking part in the ED COVIDtubation exercise prepared me for the real experience! I learned about the need for clear communication, to be spatially aware because of the PAPR equipment and to keep in mind each team member’s capabilities. After the course, I educated team members on these concepts during a recent patient case."
Custom Medical Simulation Courses
If you have a specific training in mind, our team can help. CHLA simulation medicine staff can tailor programs to your organization’s precise needs. These services are available at the Las Madrinas Simulation Center, or our team can come to your facility.
Conducting courses at your facility enables us to tailor the experience to your organization’s physical layout and care protocols. We then adapt trainings to the nuances of your local health system, including geographic constraints and neighboring hospital protocols.
Our team has experience matching learning experiences to your organization’s protocols, culture and team dynamics. To learn more, call 323-361-4159 or email us at SimTeam@chla.usc.edu.
Standard Simulation Courses
On-site courses take place in our state-of-the-art simulation facilities. The Las Madrinas Simulation Center is home to a variety of training settings, including an emergency room, intensive care unit, operating room and more. We also use the best available equipment, including high-fidelity mannequins and virtual reality technology.
Pediatric experts and researchers specializing in simulation medicine guide our course offerings. They collaborate with facilitators (many of whom are Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators) and technicians to help learners achieve their goals.
Our standard medical simulation training center courses include:

Research simulation courses
- COVID Barrier Study: Using simulated resuscitation teams, we measure simulated COVID viral spread during complex resuscitations.
- PEAK (Pediatric Errors in Anaphylaxis in Kids): Simulations of increasing complexity identified areas of errors for teams to solve and mitigate before patient care.
- BLS XR Study: We study differences in traditional CPR training vs. virtual reality-enhanced CPR training on ultimate CPR performance skills.
- NRP VR Study: We are piloting a new software in virtual reality that allows for multi-player neonatal resuscitation skills practice with two people in different locations, even different countries.
Role development simulation courses
- Foundation of Simulation, a course for simulationists, technicians, educators and researchers
- Mannequin Refresher Course for Simulationists
- Preceptor Development Program
- Transition to Practice Program for new graduate registered nurses and respiratory care practitioners without pediatric experience and transition fellow RNs interested in transitioning to an acute care pediatric setting
Specialized emergency simulation courses
- COVID Mock Codes: This course teaches integration of personal protective equipment and special isolation during resuscitation.
- Disaster Medicine and Mass Casualty: This multi-patient simulation tests handling of unknown numbers of patients simultaneously.
- Mass Transfusion Protocol: This systems simulation tests and refines how multiple blood products can be delivered and administered safely.
- Special Pathogen/Provider Down: This simulation prepares teams for the rare event that a clinical provider in full protective equipment goes down during clinical care.
- Latent Safety Threats Analysis: This full-scale simulation facilitates practice of rare or multi-factorial complications to improve patient safety.
