Las Madrinas Simulation Center Facilities
The Las Madrinas Simulation Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a modern, 5,000-square-foot training facility. We provide immersive learning experiences that help pediatric health care providers efficiently navigate acute issues and deliver bedside procedures.
The Las Madrinas Simulation Center at a Glance
Our pediatric simulation facilities replicate a variety of clinical settings. Learners safely practice addressing rare, complex and high-stress medical scenarios affecting children and their families.
The breadth of our offerings enables us to accommodate a broad range of simulation center courses and training scenarios. Clinical spaces include:
- Emergency transport ambulance rig and helicopter
- Intensive care unit
- Medical-surgical room
- Operating room
- Outpatient clinics
We use the best available pediatric simulation technologies to provide a realistic experience and valuable real-time feedback—almost as if you are involved in an actual patient case. High-fidelity mannequins (interactive, anatomically correct newborn, baby and child training devices) and virtual reality technology provide near-lifelike experiences.
Leaders in Pediatric Medical Simulation
In addition to exceptional facilities, CHLA is home to specialists at the forefront of pediatric medical simulation. Our team leads research that’s advancing the field. We impart our knowledge through international speaking engagements, and fellowships and medical education opportunities. Experts are also available to consult with up-and-coming simulation centers about technologies, equipment and best practices.
More Information About Our Simulation Facilities
Additional simulation center capabilities include:
Audio-visual control room and debriefing room
Pediatric simulation rooms capture live audio-visual feeds. During trainings, observers and facilitators sit in an adjacent control room with a one-way mirror. They have the option to provide real-time feedback. With learners’ permission, we may record trainings for educational purposes.
After simulations are complete, facilitators meet with participants in debriefing rooms. Some rooms can accommodate as many as 70 people. During debriefings, teams review videos and share observations. These meetings provide valuable opportunities for asking questions and discussing key learnings.
Virtual reality room
CHLA has made significant contributions to virtual reality (VR) medicine through research. We are one of the platform’s earliest adopters. VR medicine offers an alternative to mannequin-based simulations requiring complex equipment or large teams. It also provides quantitative feedback about simulation activities that are difficult to capture during live scenarios.
Off-campus simulations
We can accommodate off-campus simulations, such as Van Nuys Airport, where the CHLA emergency transport helicopter hanger is located.
Wet lab with 3D printer
Our wet lab and 3D printer help us adapt mannequins to the ever-changing needs of our learners. We use the printer to construct replacement mannequin parts or replicate functional and still forms of anatomy such as organs and bones. We are working toward replicating complex anomalies.
Our team also has robust moulage capabilities. Moulage uses sophisticated artistry to create traumatic wounds on mannequins in stunning detail.
