Diagnosing Breathing, Lung and Sleep Disorders in Children
Pulmonology and sleep medicine experts at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles use the latest technology and advanced procedures to diagnose common and complex breathing, lung and sleep disorders in children. You can feel confident bringing your child to us for expert diagnosis and care.
As a national, experienced leader in pulmonology and sleep medicine, we have decades of experience diagnosing pediatric respiratory and sleep issues. Our team relies on your child’s test results and unique diagnosis to tailor the most effective treatment plan.
Tests to Diagnose Pediatric Breathing, Lung and Sleep Disorders
Your child sees a dedicated care team that specializes in pediatric breathing, lung and sleep issues. Our experts work together to determine which diagnostic tests your child needs based on their unique symptoms and health history.
Your child may get one or more of these tests:
- Imaging scans
- Pulmonary function tests
- Sleep studies
- Triple scope and other aerodigestive disorder tests
Imaging scans
Our radiology and imaging team uses the latest technology to capture high-quality images of your child’s lungs and respiratory system. We also use EOS low-radiation X-rays to minimize radiation exposure in children with chronic breathing issues who need more frequent imaging tests.
The imaging scans we use include:
- Chest CT scan
- Chest X-rays
- CT scans
- MRIs
- X-rays and fluoroscopy (moving X-ray images)
Pulmonary function tests
Experts at our Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory perform a variety of tests to evaluate your child’s breathing and lung health. We know how to keep children comfortable and engaged during testing, ensuring the best test results for an accurate diagnosis. Learn more about our Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory.
Sleep studies
Our nationally accredited Sleep Center is one of a select few in the nation focused exclusively on diagnosing sleep disorders in children. Sleep studies take place in our dedicated Sleep Laboratory under the guidance of Board-certified pediatric sleep medicine physicians. Learn more about our Sleep Center.
Triple scope and other aerodigestive disorder tests
We’re one of a few centers in the nation performing a combination of three endoscopic procedures (a triple scope) to diagnose pediatric aerodigestive disorders. A dedicated team comprised of a pulmonologist, otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat expert) and gastroenterologist perform three separate endoscopic procedures in one outpatient visit.
Our experts use scopes with lights and cameras to identify potential issues inside your child’s airways, lungs and upper digestive tract. This combination scope procedure minimizes your child’s discomfort and exposure to anesthesia and provides a faster diagnosis than three separate tests. Learn more about the tests we use to diagnose aerodigestive disorders.
