I Want to Support Literally Healing
Literally Healing is entirely philanthropically funded, which means all our services, from book gifting to story times and other events, are only possible through the support of generous donors. Thank you for your kind consideration of the children and families in our care!
Monetary Donations
A tax-deductible donation will bring joy and empowerment by widening a patient’s horizon—while hospitalized and long after. By donating money, Literally Healing can use our bulk discount rates to get an average of 60% off all titles we purchase. This means your donation goes even further!
- To donate via credit card, visit our donation page
- To donate via check or for any other questions, email Julie Halverson: jhalverson@chla.usc.edu
Gift Card Donations
Gift cards to retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Bookshop.org allow us the flexibility to meet the ever-changing needs of patients and families.
- Send an electronic gift card to literallyhealing@chla.usc.edu
Amazon Wish List Donations
Select books or gift cards from the program’s Amazon wish lists, and they will be shipped directly to our Reading Room.
Book or Gift Card Drives
Invite your community to participate in supporting literacy at CHLA. All book donations must be 100% brand-new and recently purchased for infection prevention. We do not accept self-published or independently published books. Gift card drives can be a meaningful alternative to traditional book drives.
- If you would like to hold a book or gift card drive, email literallyhealing@chla.usc.edu
Self-published and Independently Published Books
Due to the diverse nature of our patient population, all new titles are reviewed before being accepted. Because we have such a small team, we have made the difficult decision that we can no longer accept self-published or independently published books.
For our Therapeutic Library, we do not review unsolicited therapeutic titles or autobiographical medical books. Due to the volume of requests we receive, we cannot guarantee a reply if you mail in a copy of your book.
Volunteer for Literally Healing
Volunteers are vital to the Literally Healing program. From interacting with patients and families in the Reading Room, to giving away books, to reading with patients both one-on-one and in busier story time settings. If you would like to make a difference for hospitalized children and their families through Literally Healing at CHLA, we welcome and thank you for considering giving your time and energy to this important service.
For information about how to volunteer and a link to the application, visit the Volunteer Resources page.
If your company or organization would like to volunteer, please reach out to literallyhealing@chla.usc.edu. We can connect you with the appropriate team to support these requests.
