Inpatient Recreational Gifting Library

Every day patients and families are in the hospital, each family member can choose and keep a free, brand-new book, compliments of Literally Healing and CHLA. To get a free book from our Gifting Library, you can come to the Reading Room, or one of our team members can drop books off in your room. We offer books in all languages.

Reading Room

While staying overnight at the hospital, you can relax in our fun, book-themed Reading Room while engaging with books and literacy games or chatting about your favorite titles with our staff and volunteers.

Each patient, sibling and parent/caregiver can take home one free, brand-new book every day from the Literally Healing Gifting Library, located inside the Reading Room. Patients and siblings receive an additional free book for each 20 minutes they spend reading or playing one of the games in the Reading Room.

Location: Reading Room, Anderson Pavilion - 6 West
Hours:

• Monday – Friday    
  Anderson 4th floor families: 12 – 1 p.m.    
  All other inpatients: 1 – 3 p.m. & 6 – 7 p.m.
• Saturday & Sunday
  Anderson 4th floor families: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. 
  All other inpatients: 3 – 6 p.m.

For everyone’s health and safety, patients must be on Standard Isolation Precautions for anyone in the family to be able to enter the Reading Room. You can ask your child’s nurse if they are allowed to go. If patients are unable to visit the Reading Room, they can call or email to request a book to be delivered. Please include:

• The patient's room number
• Age
• Type of book the patient would like

We provide books for siblings and parents/caregivers as well, so let us know if you would like a chapter book or magazine for yourself. One of our staff members or volunteers will be happy to drop something off.

Bedside Reading and Delivery

Literally Healing has trained volunteers and staff who will deliver books and read bedside in both inpatient and some outpatient units. You may recognize our volunteers with their brightly colored book carts roaming the halls. Parents/caregivers, feel free to join in a fun story or allow our volunteers to read with your child while you grab a coffee or take a moment for yourself.

Due to scheduling, we cannot guarantee that a volunteer will be on every unit daily. If you haven’t seen anyone, please call ext. 16801 from your room phone to request a visit from Literally Healing, and a volunteer or staff member will be happy to come by your room.

Weekly Story Time Event

For inpatients only: Join Literally Healing in our Reading Room every Wednesday for Stories Under the Stars. Together, we journey into magical worlds of imagination under a ceiling alight with stars and read stories by flashlight. This fun event is sure to make kids smile as they sit on one of our oversized mushrooms and laugh along with some silly tales. Patients receive two extra books after the story.
